On February 19 our LHS Jazz Bands attended the Florida Band Masters Association’s District 19 Jazz Music Performance Assessment. These students have been working on this music since January and performed in front of a panel of 3 judges rating them on a scale of Poor, Fair, Good, Excellent, and Superior (F-A grade scale). They’re judged on 3 major categories of technical, musical, and fundamental skills with various subcategories. Congratulations to the LHS Swing Band for earning their first Jazz MPA Superior (an A rating) in 14 years! This also qualifies them to attend the State level assessment held next month! Congratulations to the LHS Big Band for their first ever Jazz MPA appearance. They earned straight Excellents (a B rating) in their debut!

Dating violence is more common than you may think, especially among teens and young adults. In fact, 1 in 3 U.S. teens will experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse from someone they’re in a relationship with before becoming adults, according to loveisrespect.org. Each February, young adults and their loved ones nationwide raise awareness about teen dating violence through Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM). This annual, month-long effort focuses on advocacy and education to stop dating abuse before it starts.
